About Whirlpool cooktops.

Whirlpool cooktops come in three technologies — WCE electric radiant, WCG gas, and WCI induction — built around FlexHeat dual elements, SpeedHeat and AccuSimmer burners, and Booster fast boil. They are diagnosed by symptom, with the LOC control lock a feature rather than a fault.

Whirlpool cooktops: series and lineup

Whirlpool cooktops come in three technologies, and matching the technology is the first step in any lasting repair. Electric ceramic-glass radiant (WCE) models such as the WCE55US0HS, WCE77US0HS, and WCE97US6KS use radiant elements beneath a smooth glass top, with FlexHeat dual and triple elements that resize to the pan. Gas (WCG and WCGK) models such as the WCG55US0HS, WCG97US0HS, WCG97US6HS, and WCGK5036PS use sealed burners with EZ-2-Lift hinged cast-iron grates, and the 5-burner builds add a removable center griddle. Induction (WCI and WCIT) models such as the WCI55US0JS, WCI55US0JB, WCIT7530SB, and WCIT7536SS heat the pan directly through a magnetic field for fast, responsive, easy-to-clean cooking. The number in many SKUs tracks width, with most 30-inch and the 36-inch builds such as the WCE97US6KS and WCG97US6HS adding a fifth element or burner. You can review the current cooktop range on the manufacturer’s site at whirlpool.com and the models we service in our model directory. If your unit has an oven below the cooking surface, it is a range, so see our range repair page instead.

Whirlpool cooktops technologies and features

The three technologies cook and fail differently, which is why confirming the type matters before any part is ordered. On a radiant WCE the FlexHeat dual or triple element resizes from a small ring to a large one, a warm zone holds finished food, a hot-surface indicator warns while the glass is still hot, and tap-touch controls with a Control Lock sit flush on the glass. On a gas WCG the SpeedHeat burner delivers a fast high-BTU boil while the AccuSimmer burner holds a gentle low flame, and the EZ-2-Lift hinged grates and SpillGuard surface keep cleanup simple. On an induction WCI the cooking happens in the pan itself, so the glass stays cooler, a Booster or Fast Boil brings water up quickly, and Temp Cook builds such as the WCIT7530SB use dual sensors to hold a set temperature. Because induction needs magnetic cookware, a pan that will not heat is most often a cookware-compatibility issue tested with a magnet rather than a fault. The parts that wear follow the technology: radiant elements and infinite switches on a WCE, sealed-burner igniters and the spark module on a WCG, and the induction coils, the cooling fan, and the user interface on a WCI, with the glass surface and the control board common to the glass-top builds.

Common issues and maintenance

A Whirlpool cooktop is diagnosed by symptom rather than a published fault-code table, so do not expect a code lookup. The calls we see most are an element or burner that will not heat, a burner that clicks or sparks continuously, a touch panel that is unresponsive or registers phantom touches, a cracked or chipped glass surface, an element stuck on high, and an induction zone that will not recognise a pan. On a gas WCG a burner that keeps clicking is often just moisture under the cap that needs to dry before the clicking clears, otherwise a clogged port, a weak igniter, or the spark module. On a glass-top WCE or WCI a phantom touch or an unresponsive panel is usually a spill or grease on the surface, cleared and dried before any board is suspected. A common point of confusion is the LOC control-lock indicator, sometimes shown as an “L” or a padlock icon: this is a feature, not a fault, cleared by holding the lock button for a few seconds, and a panel that seems dead is frequently just locked. An induction PAN message means the cookware is non-magnetic, too small, or off-center rather than a hardware failure. Routine care keeps faults to a minimum, so keep burner ports and caps clean and seated, dry them after cleaning, wipe spills from a glass top promptly, never use a cracked cooktop, and use flat magnetic cookware sized to the induction zone. When to call for repair

Radiant elements and infinite switches, gas igniters and spark modules, induction coils and cooling fans, surface sensors, and control boards are best handled by experienced technicians who can read a no-heat or stuck-element symptom correctly, since no diagnostic display will do it for them. A stuck-on element is treated with urgency because a relay welded closed is a burn and fire risk, and a cracked glass top is taken out of service until it is replaced. As an independent, third-party service our skilled technicians fit genuine OEM parts from trusted parts suppliers and back every visit with a 30-day labor warranty on the workmanship. We serve homes across all 50 states and the District of Columbia with a fast response in dozens of metros, listed in our service areas. Note the technology and your WCE, WCG, or WCI model number when you book. A clear quote is given before work begins and the total depends on the diagnosis, with pricing that starts from a trip-and-diagnostic fee and never a fixed price sight unseen.
