The magnetic principle behind how a Whirlpool induction cooktop works

Under each cooking zone sits a coil of wire. When you turn the zone on, the cooktop runs a rapidly alternating electric current through that coil, which creates a rapidly changing magnetic field just above the glass. When a ferromagnetic pan (cast iron or magnetic stainless) sits in that field, the field induces swirling electric currents — called eddy currents — inside the metal of the pan. The pan metal resists those currents, and that resistance generates heat directly in the pan. The glass only gets warm by contact with the hot pan, not from the coil itself.

Why this design behaves the way it does

  • Speed and efficiency: heat is created in the pan rather than transferred through glass, so water boils quickly and very little energy is wasted heating the cooktop.
  • Pan detection: if no magnetic pan is present, there is nothing to induce currents in, so the cooktop senses no load and will not power the coil — which is why it appears not to detect a pan when the cookware is wrong.

  • A cooler surface: the glass cools faster after cooking because it was never the primary heater.

A faint buzzing or humming at high power comes from the magnetic forces vibrating the pan and the coil — it is more noticeable with lightweight or multi-layer pans and is normal. The small cooling fan you hear is keeping the power electronics under the glass at a safe temperature, and it may run on after you switch off. A clicking or ticking on lower settings is the cooktop pulsing power on and off to deliver a low average heat, since induction controls power in bursts.
