The Whirlpool WRFC2036RZ is a 20 cu ft French-door bottom-mount refrigerator, 36 inches wide and counter-depth, in fingerprint-resistant stainless. Installing one is not difficult, but a counter-depth model is built to sit nearly flush with the cabinets, which leaves less room for mistakes than a standard-depth refrigerator. This guide covers the measurements to take before delivery day, the water line, the door swing, the leveling and the first 24 hours, so the refrigerator ends up flush, quiet and cooling properly.
What should you measure before the WRFC2036RZ arrives?
Start with the path, not the opening. A 36-inch refrigerator has to get through the front door, around a hallway turn and into the kitchen, and the delivery crew can only shave an inch or two by removing handles and doors. Measure every doorway and corner on the route. Then measure the opening: width at the top and the bottom, height under the upper cabinet, and depth from the wall to the front edge of the neighboring counters.
Counter-depth means the cabinet body of the refrigerator lines up near the counter edge, but the doors and handles still stand proud of it, and the hinges need clearance behind. Leave a small gap on each side and at the top, and check the manufacturer’s installation sheet for the exact figures for your unit, because the numbers for ventilation and hinge clearance matter more than the headline width.
Where should the water line and the outlet be?
The refrigerator needs a cold water supply for the ice maker and the EveryDrop water filter, and a grounded outlet within reach of the cord. The best arrangement is a shutoff valve on the cold line, with a length of flexible tubing long enough to let the refrigerator be pulled out for cleaning without straining the connection. Do not stretch the line tight, and do not kink it behind the unit, because a kinked or squashed supply is a common cause of slow ice and weak dispensing.
Plug directly into a grounded wall outlet. Avoid an extension cord or a power strip, since the compressor draws a surge when it starts. If the outlet is worn or loose, have it replaced before the refrigerator goes in. Our EveryDrop filter guide explains what the filter does and when it needs changing.
How do you plan the door swing on a 36-inch French-door model?
French doors swing out from the center, so each door needs room to open at an angle rather than a full ninety degrees. Check that a wall, a pantry door or an island does not stop the door before the bins and shelves can slide out. If the refrigerator sits next to a side wall, leave extra room on that side so the door can open wide enough to pull the crisper drawers fully out for cleaning. A refrigerator that cannot open fully is the usual reason people regret an install, not a flaw in the model.

How do you level it and set the doors?
Once the refrigerator is in position, use the front leveling feet to bring it level side to side and tilt it very slightly back so the doors swing closed on their own. A refrigerator that leans forward will have doors that hang open, and the door seals will not seat evenly, which warms the cabinet and invites frost. Set the doors so the gap at the top is even from side to side, and check that the two French doors meet cleanly in the middle. A slight height difference between doors is usually adjustable at the hinge.
After leveling, close the doors on a sheet of paper at several points around the seal. The paper should resist when you pull it out. If it slides out easily at one spot, the seal there is not making contact, and the fix is usually a small leveling or hinge adjustment. What should you do in the first 24 hours?
Do not load the refrigerator at once. Let it run empty for several hours and let the cabinet reach temperature before you add food, and follow the setup sheet for the initial settings. Install the water filter if one is supplied separately, and follow the instructions to run water through it before you drink from it. Discard the first batches of ice, because new lines and a new filter can leave a taste. Check the connection at the back for any drip after the water has been on for an hour or so, because a small leak at a fitting shows up quickly and is easy to fix before it reaches the floor.
If water appears under the unit in the first days, look at the fittings before suspecting the refrigerator. Our Whirlpool refrigerator water leaking guide walks through the other causes, such as a clogged defrost drain.
When is it better to have a technician do it?
A new supply line, a first-time ice maker connection or an outlet that needs replacing are good reasons to bring in a professional. We are an independent repair company, not the manufacturer, and the same applies if the refrigerator is warm after a day or the ice maker does not start. Our general refrigerator installation guide covers the steps common to every Whirlpool model, and the Whirlpool refrigerator repair service can check the unit once it is running.
