A musty smell in a Whirlpool washer comes from detergent residue and biofilm in the gasket, dispenser, and tub. Monthly Clean Washer cycles and gasket wiping fix it.

If your whirlpool washer smells musty, sour, or like mildew, it is almost never the machine breaking down — it is biofilm. A film of detergent residue, fabric softener, body oils, and trapped moisture builds up in the door gasket, the dispenser drawer, and the tub, and bacteria living in that film produce the odor. Front-load WFW models are the most prone to it because the door seal traps water, but top-loaders develop it too. With a regular cleaning routine you can clear an existing smell and keep it from coming back.

Why a whirlpool washer smells in the first place

High-efficiency washers use very little water, so detergent does not always rinse fully away. Combined with the warm, damp interior, that leftover residue becomes food for odor-causing bacteria. The usual culprits are using too much detergent, using regular (non-HE) detergent in an HE machine, washing only in cold water, and leaving the door closed between loads so the drum never dries. Excess suds can also trip an F0E5 code, which is a sign you are over-dosing.

How to clean it step by step

  1. Run the Clean Washer cycle. Most Whirlpool models have a dedicated Clean Washer cycle. Use an affresh tablet or a cup of liquid chlorine bleach in an empty machine, monthly.
  2. Wipe the door gasket. On front-loaders, peel back the rubber boot and wipe out the trapped water, hair, and gunk with a vinegar or mild bleach solution.
  3. Remove and rinse the dispenser drawer. Pull it out fully and scrub off the hardened detergent and softener sludge.
  4. Clean the pump filter. Standing water in the filter goes stagnant and stinks; clearing it removes a hidden odor source.
  5. Leave the door open between loads so the interior dries.

For more upkeep routines across the appliance, our Whirlpool washer maintenance checklist ties these tasks into a simple monthly and yearly schedule.

A few extra targets are worth knowing about, because odor hides in places people rarely look. On front-load models, water collects in the rubber boot fold at the very bottom of the door, where lint, hair, and coins settle and slowly rot — wiping only the visible part of the gasket leaves that pocket untouched. The detergent dispenser channels are another reservoir: softener turns to a thick, sour sludge in the back of the drawer and in the siphon cap, so pull the drawer right out and rinse the housing behind it as well. If your model has a removable pump-filter cap, the small amount of standing water that always sits there can develop a smell of its own. Finally, avoid the common mistake of using more detergent to fight the odor; extra detergent simply leaves more residue, feeds more bacteria, and can trip an F0E5 suds fault, making the problem worse rather than better.

When cleaning is not enough

If the smell persists after a thorough clean, water may be sitting where it should not — a partially clogged drain, a sagging hose, or a failing pump that does not fully empty the tub. A washer that smells and also leaves standing water is worth a professional look. You can book a service visit and our experienced technicians will check the drain path and seals. Whirlpool also publishes care instructions for each model at whirlpool.com.

How to keep it fresh

Switch to HE detergent and measure carefully, run a monthly Clean Washer cycle, wipe the gasket weekly, and crack the door open after every load. These five-minute habits prevent the biofilm that causes nearly every washer-odor complaint. It also helps to move finished loads to the dryer promptly rather than leaving wet laundry sitting in a closed drum for hours, since that warm, damp environment is exactly what the odor-causing bacteria thrive in. If odor comes with leaks or drainage trouble, our Whirlpool washer repair service can diagnose the underlying cause.
