Why Whirlpool induction cooktop pan detection fails

Induction does not heat the glass — it heats the metal of a compatible pan directly through magnetism. If the pan is aluminum, copper, glass, or many stainless blends that are not magnetic, the cooktop cannot couple to it and reports no pan. Even a compatible pan that is too small (below the minimum diameter for that zone) or pushed off to one side will not be recognized. Warped pan bottoms that do not sit flat on the glass also break detection.

Steps to try

  • The magnet test: hold a household magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it sticks firmly, the pan is induction-compatible. If it barely holds or falls off, that pan will never work on induction.
  • Check the size: the pan base should roughly match the printed zone — most Whirlpool zones need a base of about 4 to 5 inches minimum. A tiny saucepan on a large zone may not register.
  • Center it: place the pan squarely over the zone marking, not straddling two zones or hanging off the edge.
  • Check the base is flat: a warped or domed bottom lifts the metal away from the glass and breaks coupling.
  • Test a known-good pan on each zone. If a confirmed-magnetic, correctly sized pan works on some zones but not one, that single zone may have a coil fault.

When detection drops out mid-cook

A different and confusing symptom is a pan that detects fine at first but cuts out partway through cooking. There are a few innocent explanations before you suspect the cooktop. Induction cooktops briefly stop powering a zone if the pan is lifted off — stirring by raising the pan, or shaking a saute pan, can momentarily break detection, and the zone resumes when the pan sits back down. Some Whirlpool models also reduce or pause power if the cookware or the electronics get too hot, protecting both; giving it a moment usually restores normal operation. A very lightweight or thin-based pan can also lose good contact as it heats and slightly warps, intermittently dropping out. If, however, a heavy flat magnetic pan that is sitting still keeps cutting out on one specific zone, that points to the coil or its sensor for that zone rather than the cookware, and it is worth a professional check.
