If you are searching the bare number, the short answer is this: the whirlpool gi15ndxxs is a prior-revision Gold-series 15-inch undercounter ice machine that makes up to 50 pounds of ice a day into a 25-pound bin. It has two close relatives, GI15NDXZS and GI15PDXZS, and the difference between them is not cosmetic. One letter in the middle of the number decides whether the cabinet drains by gravity or through a built-in pump, and that decides where the machine can be installed at all.

GI15NDXXSPrior-revision Gold series. Up to 50 lb/day, 25 lb bin, flat reversible door, Fast Ice, built-in filtered ice, scoop included. Gravity drain.
GI15NDXZSThe later Gold-series revision. Same output and bin, reversible door, Fast Ice, and an Electronic Clean Cycle the earlier model does not have. Gravity drain.
GI15PDXZSGold series with a built-in drain pump. Same 15-inch cabinet, same 50 lb/day, plus Electronic Clean Cycle and Fast Ice.
The letters that matterND means a gravity drain. PD means a pump on board. Everything else in the number is series, revision and finish.
StatusAll three are discontinued. Parts and service are still available; the current 15-inch equivalent is the WUI75 family.

What is the Whirlpool GI15NDXXS, and how does it differ from the GI15NDXZS?

Both are 15-inch undercounter ice machines from the Gold series, built to drop into a standard cabinet run beside a dishwasher or a wine chiller. Both make up to 50 pounds of ice a day and hold 25 pounds in the bin. Both take a water line and give you filtered ice, a Fast Ice option and a reversible door so the machine can open either way depending on where you stand.

The GI15NDXZS is the later revision, and the feature it adds is the Electronic Clean Cycle — a guided cleaning routine started from the panel. On the GI15NDXXS, cleaning is a manual job: you mix the solution, run it through by hand and rinse. That single difference changes the maintenance routine, which matters more on an ice machine than on almost any other appliance, because the parts that fail are the parts that scale up. Our guide to Whirlpool ice machine cleaning covers the routine for both.

The door is the other small difference. The earlier model uses a flat reversible door; the later revision changed the panel styling. Neither affects the refrigeration side.

What does the letter pair in a GI15 model number tell you?

Whirlpool numbers these machines in blocks, and the two letters after GI15 are the ones worth learning. ND is a gravity drain: the machine relies on a drain line that runs downhill from the cabinet to a trap. PD carries a built-in drain pump, so meltwater can be pushed up and across to a drain that sits above the machine.

That choice is made by the kitchen, not by preference. An island installation, a basement bar, or any cabinet where the nearest drain is higher than the machine needs the pump model. A run of cabinets against an exterior wall with a sink nearby usually does not. Getting it wrong is the most expensive mistake in an ice machine installation, because it is discovered after the cabinet is closed up. The water, drain and airflow requirements are set out in our guide to Whirlpool ice machine installation.

The model and serial number tag on the inside wall of an undercounter ice machine cabinet, photographed with the door held open
The tag inside the door carries the full model number, including the digits that identify the production run.

Where do you find the model number on a GI15?

Open the door and look at the inside wall of the cabinet, usually on the left near the top, or along the frame behind the door gasket. The tag carries the full model number and the serial. Write both down exactly, including the trailing letters and any digits after them — a GI15NDXXS0 and a GI15NDXXS1 are different production runs, and some parts changed between them.

If the tag is unreadable, which happens on machines that have been scrubbed for a decade, the drain tells you most of what you need: look for a pump body at the base of the cabinet behind the front grille. A pump means a PD machine. No pump and a plain hose leaving the base means an ND.

What fails first on a GI15 ice machine?

These machines have a predictable aging pattern, and knowing it helps you judge whether a repair is worth doing:

  • Scale on the evaporator. The most common cause of slow or hollow ice. It is maintenance, not a part failure, and it is why the Electronic Clean Cycle on the later revision matters.
  • The water inlet valve. A slow valve gives short cycles and small cubes; a leaking one keeps the bin wet and fuses the ice into a block.
  • The drain pump, on PD models. It runs every harvest for years. When it tires, water backs up in the base and the machine stops on a full sensor.
  • The condenser and its fan. Undercounter machines pull air through a narrow front grille. Dust and pet hair blind it, the machine runs hot and harvests slowly.
  • The bin thermostat or level sensor. A machine that stops with a half-empty bin, or one that overfills, is usually reporting the bin rather than the ice.

If the symptom is no ice at all rather than slow ice, the ordered checks in our guide to a Whirlpool ice machine not making ice are the place to start, and they apply to all three GI15 models.

Is a discontinued GI15 still worth keeping?

Usually yes, and for a specific reason: the cabinet is 15 inches wide and built into a cabinet run. Replacing it means matching that opening, the water line, the drain and the power, and a current machine that fits will cost several times what a valve, a pump or a fan motor costs. Sealed-system work is the exception — a compressor or a refrigerant leak on a machine this old is where the arithmetic turns, and that is the conversation worth having before parts are ordered.

The other thing to weigh is water. An ice machine in a hard-water area that has never been descaled will come back to you with the same complaint in a year, whatever part gets fitted. A repair on a machine with a fresh cleaning routine lasts; a repair on one without it does not.

What replaces a GI15 today?

The current 15-inch equivalent is the WUI75 family — for example the WUI75X15HZ, which keeps the 25-pound bin and the reversible door and adds Clear Ice Technology, a self-cleaning cycle and a fingerprint-resistant stainless finish. The one thing to check before ordering is the drain: the current gravity-drain models expect a downhill run, exactly as the ND machines did, so a kitchen that needed a PD machine still needs a pump. Before you shop at all, make sure you know which appliance you actually have — the difference is explained in our guide to a Whirlpool ice machine compared with an ice maker.

We are an independent repair company, not a factory service arm, and on a legacy machine like this one that matters: we will say plainly when a sealed-system failure means the machine has reached the end rather than selling you a repair it will not survive. Pricing starts from a diagnostic visit and we confirm the estimate before any work begins. Have the model and serial from the inside wall ready when you book Whirlpool ice machine repair, or schedule a visit online and say whether your cabinet has a drain pump.
