Whirlpool sealed gas burner cleaning takes about fifteen minutes and prevents most of the “burner clicks but will not light” and “flame is weak and yellow” calls on gas cooktops such as the WCGK5036PS, a 36-inch cooktop with five sealed burners, a SpeedHeat burner, a 5,000 BTU simmer burner and hinged cast-iron grates. The job is simple: turn everything off, let it cool, lift the parts off, clear the burner ports, dry everything completely and seat the caps correctly. This guide shows how, and what to avoid.
What does a sealed gas burner on a Whirlpool cooktop consist of?
A sealed burner has three parts you can see. The burner cap sits on top and spreads the flame in a ring. The burner base underneath has small slots, called ports, around its edge where the gas and air mixture comes out. Beside the base is the spark electrode, a small ceramic and metal tip that makes the click and the spark that lights the gas. Under the glass or metal top, a spark module sends the high voltage to the electrode.
The word “sealed” means that spills stay on the cooktop surface instead of falling into an open pan below the burner. That makes the surface easier to clean, but it also means boiled-over food lands right on the cap, the ports and the electrode, which is why those parts are what you clean.
How do you take a Whirlpool gas cooktop apart for cleaning?
Turn every knob to off and wait until the cooktop is completely cool. If you smell gas at any time, stop, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Lift the hinged cast-iron grates, then lift each burner cap straight up. Set the caps on a towel, and note which cap goes with which burner, because the sizes differ and the SpeedHeat and simmer burners are not interchangeable with the rest.
Do not remove the burner base unless the manual says it lifts out. On most sealed burners the base stays put, and you clean it in place. Never pull on the spark electrode, and keep water away from it.
How do you clean the caps, grates and ports?
Wash the caps in warm water with dish soap and a soft brush, and dry them with a towel. Wash the cast-iron grates in the same way, and dry them completely so they do not rust. For baked-on food on a cap, soak it in warm soapy water for twenty minutes before you scrub. Avoid steel wool and oven cleaner on any burner part, since they damage the finish.
Now look at the ports on the burner base. Food and grease collect there and block the flame. Clear each port with a straight pin, a paper clip or a toothpick, using a gentle in-and-out motion. Do not widen the ports or poke the pin deep into the base, since a bigger port changes the flame. Wipe the base with a barely damp cloth, never a dripping one, because water that runs into the ports or onto the electrode is the main cause of a burner that will not light after cleaning.

How do you clean the spark electrode?
Use a dry cotton swab, or one barely dampened with a little rubbing alcohol, to remove crust from the electrode tip. Do not scrape it with a metal tool, because a crack in the ceramic stops the spark. A dirty electrode may click but fail to ignite, while a cracked electrode may spark weakly or only sometimes. If the tip looks chipped or split, that is a replacement job, not a cleaning job.
How do you put it back together so it lights properly?
Let every part dry completely, and give the base a few more minutes to air out, before you reassemble. Place each cap on its own burner, and make sure it sits flat and centered. A cap that is tilted or off to one side causes a lopsided flame, a yellow flame, or a burner that clicks and never catches. Set the grates back, then turn on each burner in turn and watch the flame. A healthy flame is mostly blue and even around the ring, with no gaps.
If one burner still will not light, give it ten minutes more to dry and try again. If it keeps failing, our gas cooktop burner will not light guide covers the other causes, such as the spark module.
What else is worth knowing about this cooktop?
The SpeedHeat burner is the high-output one for boiling and searing, and the simmer burner holds a very low flame for sauces. Both rely on clear ports, which is why a clogged simmer burner often shows up first as a flame that goes out at low settings. Our guides to how Whirlpool SpeedHeat works and Whirlpool AccuSimmer tips explain how each burner behaves. If you are planning a new cooktop rather than cleaning an old one, the cooktop installation guide covers the cutout and the gas connection.
We are an independent repair company, not the manufacturer. If a clean burner still clicks without lighting, or the flame stays yellow, our Whirlpool cooktop repair service can test the electrode and the spark module, and you can book a visit online.
