TL;DR: A ductless Whirlpool range hood uses a charcoal filter behind the grease filter to catch odors. It cannot be washed, it wears out with cooking, and swapping it takes a few minutes with the power off.

Whirlpool range hood charcoal filter replacement is a five-minute job on a hood that is set up for ductless, or recirculating, venting: turn the hood and its light off, remove the metal grease filter, drop out the old charcoal filter, fit the new one in the same orientation and put the grease filter back. The charcoal filter cannot be washed, so a hood that has stopped clearing cooking smells is almost always asking for a new one rather than a cleaning.

Does your Whirlpool range hood even use a charcoal filter?

Only if it recirculates air back into the kitchen. A hood vented through a duct to the outdoors carries smoke, steam and odors outside and needs only its metal grease filters. A hood that cannot vent outside instead pulls air through the grease filter, pushes it through a charcoal filter that absorbs odors, and returns it to the room. Some Whirlpool hoods, including the 30 inch WVU17UC0JS, are convertible and can be set up either way. If you are not sure which way yours was installed, look at the top: a duct collar connected to a pipe means ducted, and a plain top panel with a vent opening that points back into the room means ductless.

If your hood is ducted and still smells, the cause is not a charcoal filter. A clogged grease filter or a blocked duct is far more likely, and our Whirlpool range hood weak suction guide covers it.

When should you replace the charcoal filter?

The filter has no fixed expiry date because it depends on how much you cook. A household that fries or sears most evenings uses it up faster than one that mostly reheats. Common guidance for ductless hoods is to replace it every six to twelve months, but follow the interval in your owner’s manual. Signs it is spent: cooking smells linger in the kitchen long after the fan has run, the air blowing out of the hood has a stale or greasy smell, or the filter looks dark, matted or coated when you pull it out.

A charcoal filter does not make a hood move more air. If the fan seems weak, check the grease filters and the blower first, because a saturated charcoal filter reduces odor control but a clogged grease filter reduces suction.

How do you replace it step by step?

Switch the hood fan and light off at the control. If you cannot tell whether the lamp is cool, wait a few minutes, because the bulb area stays hot after use. Standing on a stable step stool rather than a chair, release the metal grease filter by pressing its latch or sliding it toward the front, depending on the model, and lower it out. The charcoal filter sits behind it, held in a bracket or slot. Note which way it faces before removing it, because a new one must go in the same way. Slide the new filter into the slots, refit the grease filter until it clicks and run the fan on low for a moment to confirm that nothing rattles.

Handle the new filter by its edges and keep the packaging until it is installed. Do not wet it, and do not try to bake, rinse or vacuum the old one. A used carbon filter that has been washed does not recover its odor-absorbing ability, and water can leave it damp and smelling.

How is the charcoal filter different from the grease filter?

They do two jobs. The grease filter is metal mesh that traps airborne grease and protects the blower from buildup; you wash it in warm soapy water on a regular schedule, as in our Whirlpool range hood grease filter cleaning guide. The charcoal filter is a carbon-based panel that absorbs odors and some smoke particles and is thrown away when it is spent. Running the hood without the grease filter, or with the charcoal filter missing in a ductless setup, lets grease build up inside the blower housing and sends odors back into the room.

How do you pick the right replacement filter?

Use your hood’s model number, which is printed on a label inside the hood body or behind the grease filter, and match the filter to that model rather than to its width alone. Two 30 inch hoods can use different filter sizes and different mounting brackets. Buy the filter that your owner’s manual or the parts listing names for the exact model, and compare its shape to the old one before you open the package. A filter that is slightly loose can let unfiltered air bypass it, which defeats the purpose.

It also helps to write the replacement date on the inside of a cabinet door or set a phone reminder. Many households forget the filter exists until the kitchen starts to smell, and a regular date makes the job part of normal upkeep.

What if the hood still performs badly afterward?

A new filter should bring odor control back. If the fan is weak, noisy, or the lights and controls do not respond, the cause lies elsewhere. Our guide to how a Whirlpool range hood works explains the parts, and the venting installation guide covers converting between ducted and ductless setups. Opening the hood’s housing to reach the blower or wiring means working near live circuits, so we advise stopping at the filters unless you have the experience and the power off at the breaker.

We are an independent repair company, not the manufacturer, and we focus on repair rather than selling filters. If your hood has a fan, light or control fault, our Whirlpool range hood repair service can diagnose it, and you can schedule a visit online.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wash a Whirlpool range hood charcoal filter?
No. Charcoal or carbon filters are not washable. Water and detergent do not restore their ability to absorb odors, so replace the filter instead.
How often should a charcoal filter be replaced?
Many manuals suggest every six to twelve months for a ductless hood, but heavy cooking shortens that. Replace it sooner if smells linger after you cook.
Does my ducted Whirlpool range hood need a charcoal filter?
No. A hood vented outdoors only needs its washable metal grease filters. The charcoal filter is for ductless or recirculating setups.
My hood fan is weak even with a new filter. What now?
Check the grease filters, the duct and the blower. If the problem continues, book a technician to test the motor and wiring.
